Maximize your Eye Color with Makeup

Maximize your Eye Color with Makeup

There are a few tricks to maximising your eye color with makeup. The first trick comes down to choosing colors that contrast with your natural eye color.

Maximize your Eye Color with Makeup

Here is a list of contrasting colors:

  • Green eyes: Pink or Purple
  • Blue Eyes: gold through to red
  • Brown Eyes: blue through to purple

When you look at the color chart on the left, you can see how opposite colors have the biggest contrast. So picking an opposite color will make your eyes stand out.

The second trick is to frame your eyes. For instance, if you have lighter colored eyes, darker colors will frame them, causing them to stand out more. For people with dark eyes, light colors tend to ‘open out’ the eye. This makes your eyes look bigger, and maximises your eye color.

The third trick is to emphasise your eyes (seems obvious really) and not some other feature. For instance, ruby red lipstick will draw attention away from your eyes. If that’s what you’re aimng for, ok. But if you really want to maximise your eye color with makeup, keep the rest of your face makeup subtle.

How to Color Gray Eyebrows

As a general rule of thumb, eyebrows should be two shades lighter than your natural hair color. However, if you have gray or blonde hair, you actually want to aim for an eyebrow color two shades darker than your hair tone.

If you want to color your gray eyebrows, there are a couple of ways of doing this. You can do it the makeup way. This means you have versatility. You can opt for subtler colors by day, stronger hues by night.

Or, if you really want to, you can dye your eyebrows. This means that they’ll stay your preferred color for several weeks at least, depending on the type of dye.

Here a few hints on first changing gray eyebrows with makeup, then with dye.

Gray Eyebrow Makeup

The easiest way to change your eyebrow color is with a pencil or eyebrow powder. The best way to apply eyebrow powder is with an angle brush. If you’re using an eyebrow pencil, choose one with a soft nib and use short blended strokes for a more natural look.

If your eyebrows are going gray, you have several options. You could simply make them a darker gray or black. Depending on your hair color (if you hair is graying too) this could look elegant. If your hair isn’t gray, or you’ve dyed it, try going two shades lighter than your dyed hair color (if it’s light) or several shades darker (if it’s a light color.)

Gray Eyebrow Dye

This is something you want to do carefully and properly. If you’re inclined to rush things, it might be a good idea to get a professional to do your eyebrows. For doing it yourself, the best way is to get an eyebrow dye kit. You can find these at most beauty salons. Don’t use normal hair dye as this can be bad for your skin.

A good idea is to do your eyebrow color first in makeup. Try several shades until you find one that really suits you. Then look for a dye that will make your eyebrows this color. If in doubt, try a shade lighter. You can always use makeup to darken your eyebrows for a more dramatic look if you want to.

Blue Green Eyes

The nice thing about having eyes that are in between shades is that you get to choose which hue you want to play up. For instance, if you want to bring out the blue in your eyes, choose rich warm browns, champagne colors, warm taupes and peach tones.

To bring out the green in your eyes go for golden browns deep purples, salmon, mauve and violets. You can use taupe as a base for both green and blue eyes, as it is a neutral color.

Smokey Eyes: the Quick and Dirty Method

Apply your mascara to both lids. Then use a black pencil eyeliner on the inside of the eyes. The key is to smudge it a little. This gives you the ‘smoke.’

Keep your lipstick neutral, natural nude or beige color.

The thing about the smokey eye is: it’s really for the young ones. It’s a youthful look, and once you reach a ‘certain’ age, it begins to look more like drag queen than sultry. Sorry.

If you’re over the smokey eye look, go for natural, minimal eye makeup. This will actually make you look younger.
