 How to Search for Jobs on America's Job Bank

Introduction

One of the most frequently used job sites in the United States, America's Job Bank functions under the guidance of the U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL). America’s Job Bank is all the more useful for searching job postings in the U.S. Military. Here's how you can search for jobs on America's Job Bank.

Instructions

Quick Search 

Step One

Go to the America's Job Bank Web site. The homepage by default displays contents of the "Job Bank" tab. Other employment-related tools include "CareerOneStop," "Career InfoNet" and "Service Locator" managed by state run and privately held organizations. Two main sections on the "Job Bank" tabpage are "Jobseekers" and "Employers". Use the "Quick Search" feature of the "Jobseekers" section to perform a basic search.

Step Two

Select a job category from the given list of occupations and type appropriate search terms in the "Enter Keyword(s)" field. Use "Tips" to make a precise result-oriented search.

Step Three

Select either of the two radio buttons to perform a location specific search. The default selection is "Enter a U.S. City" or "Zip Code" radio button. To retain the default selection, specify a city name or its zip code in the given field. Otherwise, opt for a place from the "Select a State" or "Location" drop-down list and choose the corresponding radio button to view relevant results. Avoid location details if you are open to working anywhere in the United States or want to view all vacancies in the selected job category.

Step Four

Click "Search Now" to view a list of jobs matching the specified search criteria.

Search Using Job Title

Step One

Select "Job Title" after clicking the "Job Search Job Title Search" page. A list of occupations or job categories is displayed.

Step Two

Select the desired occupation. The next page lists all categories and job titles applicable to the selected occupation. Select an appropriate sub-category or a job title.

Step Three

Use" Select a Location Option" to perform a location specific search. Select a suitable one of the four radio buttons to indicate your preference.

Step Four

Use "Additional Search Options" to focus the search. In this section, you can choose to view jobs posted within specified number of days; matching a desired education level; matching a certain work experience level; of a specific type – full-time, part-time, regular or temporary; offering remuneration in the selected salary range and mode (hourly, daily, weekly, monthly or yearly).

Step Five

Use the "Results Per Page" and "Sort" results by drop-down lists to respectively view a certain number of postings on a results page and arrange job listings by date or relevance. By default, the site shows ten results per page sorted in reverse chronological date with latest post appearing first.

Step Six

Select the "Add as a Job Scout" checkbox to create a job alert to receive email notification about new relevant leads.

Step Seven

Click "Search Now" to view a list of jobs matching the specified search criteria.

Search Using Keywords

Step One

Click "Keyword" given in the "Job Seekers" section within the "Advanced Search Methods."

Step Two

Enter the required keywords in the "Keyword(s)" field. Use "Search Tips" to narrow down the search.

Step Three

If required, give location details and additional information as stated in the job title based search.

Step Four

Click "Search Now" to view the job listing.

Search Using Military Occupational Code

Step One

Click "Military" given in the "Job Seekers" section within the "Advanced Search Methods." The "Job Search--Military Occupational Code Search" page appears.

Step Two

If you know the military occupational code, type it in the given field otherwise click "Find Code" to determine the code. Finding the military occupational code is easy and intuitive. Clicking "Find Code" prompts you to enter keywords in the "Please Enter Keyword(s) to Search by" field. Clicking "Search Now" after specifying the keywords displays relevant military codes. Select the preferred code and title and click "Use Selected Code" to view chosen code, rank and branch on the "Military Occupational Code Search" page.

Step Three

If required, give location details and additional information as stated in the job title-based search.

Step Four

Click "Search Now" to view the job listing.

Search Using Job Number

Step One

Click "Job Number" given in the "Job Seekers" section within the "Advanced Search Methods." The "Job Search--Job Number Search" page appears.

Step Two

Use the "Search" drop-down list to search for jobs based on company job ID, job number or state job ID.

Step Three

Specify related search term in the associated field.

Step Four

Select a radio button to indicate an identical or partial match.

Step Five

Click "Search Now" to view the job listing.

Overall Tips & Warnings

In the "Job Seekers" section just above the quick search feature are links to advanced search options. These options let candidates look for a job based on its title, keyword or job number.
